Bathrooms designed around Drouin homes and the people who live in them
Drouin is a town in transition. The original grid of streets around Princes Way still holds weatherboard cottages, post-war homes and solid brick houses on wide blocks, while the estates spreading north and south of the freeway have added hundreds of newer homes in a short time. Out past the town boundary, the roads climb towards Jindivick and Labertouche, drop south into dairy country and run west through Longwarry, Bunyip and Garfield towards the city. Every one of these settings shapes what a bathroom needs to do, and our work starts by understanding it.
Drouin Bathroom Renovations plans and builds bathrooms, ensuites and laundries for homeowners across Drouin 3818 and the western half of the Baw Baw Shire. We are a design-led renovation service. That means we care as much about how a room works on a busy Tuesday morning as how it looks in a photograph. It also means that the parts you will never see, such as the waterproofing membrane, the falls to the floor waste, the framing behind the vanity and the ducting above the ceiling, are planned and built with the same attention as the tiles and tapware.
Our trades are licensed and insured, every wet area is waterproofed to the Australian Standard AS 3740, and each project is described in a clear written scope before work begins. When you are ready, the first step is simple: book a design consultation and we will come to you.
What we do
We take on complete bathroom renovations as well as focused projects that fix a single problem. The most common requests we see around Drouin include:
- Full bathroom renovations, stripping a tired room back to the frame and rebuilding it with a new layout, waterproofing, tiling, fixtures and lighting.
- Ensuite renovations, often turning a cramped 1990s ensuite into a calm, private space with a walk-in shower and better storage.
- Small bathroom renovations for compact rooms where every centimetre counts.
- Laundry renovations that bring order to the busiest room in a country household.
- Shower conversions, removing an old bath or a shower-over-bath and replacing it with a level, easy-access shower.
- Leaking shower repairs, tracing the cause of water damage and rebuilding the shower properly.
- Waterproofing to AS 3740 for every wet area we build.
- Bathroom tiling for walls, floors and feature areas.
- Accessible bathrooms for people who want to stay in their homes as their needs change.
- Bathroom design, including layout planning, selections and drawings.
- Vanities and storage, from custom joinery to wall-hung units.
- Freestanding and feature baths for people who want a proper soak at the end of the day.
Each of these services has its own page with detail about the process, the decisions involved and what to expect.

How a renovation with us unfolds
A good renovation feels orderly. You know what is happening this week, what decisions are still open and when the room will be back in use. Our process is built to give you that clarity.
1. Design consultation
We visit your home, measure the room and look at the structure. We check whether the floor is concrete slab or timber on stumps, how the existing waste and water pipes run, where the exhaust fan vents, and whether there are signs of past leaks such as swollen skirtings, soft spots in the floor or staining on the ceiling below. We also talk about how you use the room: who showers when, whether children bathe in it, whether anyone has trouble stepping into the bath and what frustrates you about it today.
2. Scope and design
After the visit we prepare a written scope. It lists the work room by room, describes the waterproofing system, notes any structural or plumbing changes and sets out the selections still to be made. Where layout changes are involved, we provide drawings so you can see where the shower, vanity, toilet and storage will sit before anything is ordered.
3. Selections
Tiles, tapware, vanities, screens, lighting and accessories are chosen next. We help you narrow down the options, check that products suit the space and your water supply, and confirm lead times so nothing holds up the build.
4. Construction
On site, the work follows a careful sequence: protection of floors and furniture, strip-out, framing and rough-in plumbing and electrical work, sheeting, screeding to fall, waterproofing, curing, tiling, grouting, fit-off and final sealing. We keep you informed as each stage finishes, and we photograph the hidden work, including the membrane, so you have a record.
5. Handover
At handover we walk through the room with you, run every tap and drain, check the screen and doors, and explain how to care for the finishes. You receive the relevant compliance certificates and product information for your records.
Waterproofing comes first
Tiles and grout are not waterproof. Water passes through grout joints and fine cracks every time the shower runs. The membrane beneath the tiles is what keeps that water out of the timber framing, plaster and concrete of your home. When a membrane fails, the damage is usually hidden for months, then shows up as mould, lifting floor coverings, rotted framing or a stained ceiling in the room below.
Every wet area we build is waterproofed to AS 3740, the Australian Standard for waterproofing domestic wet areas. That standard sets out which surfaces in a bathroom must be waterproof and which must be water resistant, how junctions and penetrations are treated and how membranes are installed. In practice, our process includes bond breakers at wall-to-floor and wall-to-wall junctions, sealed penetrations around taps and outlets, puddle flanges at floor wastes, membrane upturns at doorways and full cure times before tiling begins. It is careful, patient work, and it is the reason a well-built bathroom lasts for decades.
Drouin homes and what they ask of a bathroom
Drouin’s housing is varied, and each type brings its own considerations.
Older weatherboard and post-war homes. Many of the original homes in central Drouin sit on timber stumps with timber floors. Before tiling over a timber floor, we check the stumps, bearers and joists for movement, because a springy floor will crack tiles and grout. We often add bracing or extra support under the wet area and install a compressed fibre cement sheet or similar substrate to give the tiles a stable base.
Brick veneer homes from the 1970s to 1990s. These are common through the established streets. Their bathrooms are often long and narrow with a separate toilet, a built-in bath and a shower recess with a hob. Many have reached the age where the original waterproofing, if there was any, has failed. These rooms respond well to a reworked layout, such as removing the bath to create a larger walk-in shower or combining the toilet and bathroom.
New estate homes. Homes built in the past ten to fifteen years tend to have sound structure but builder-grade finishes. Owners often ask us to upgrade the ensuite, replace a small shower with a larger one, improve storage or add heated towel rails and better lighting.
Acreage and farm homes. On rural properties around Drouin South, Jindivick, Labertouche and Buln Buln, bathrooms may connect to septic systems and tank water. We plan fixtures that suit lower or variable water pressure, consider how wastes connect to the septic system, and design hard-wearing spaces near the back door for muddy boots and work clothes.

Design that suits the way you live
A bathroom renovation is an opportunity to fix the things that annoy you every day. Some common improvements we design into Drouin bathrooms include:
- Larger, level showers with linear drains, so there is no hob to step over and the floor stays dry outside the screen.
- Storage that hides clutter, such as wall niches in the shower, mirrored shaving cabinets and deep drawers in the vanity.
- Better light, with layered lighting that combines a bright ceiling light for cleaning, soft lighting for evenings and good side lighting at the mirror.
- Warmth, through heated towel rails and, where suitable, in-floor heating to take the chill off winter mornings.
- Ventilation that actually removes moisture, with exhaust fans ducted to the outside rather than into the roof space.
- Accessibility built in, such as reinforced walls for future grab rails, wider doorways and slip-resistant floors.
Why homeowners choose a design-led renovator
Many bathroom problems come from poor planning rather than poor workmanship. A vanity that blocks the door, a toilet squeezed beside the shower, a niche that sits right where water hits, a floor that drains towards the doorway: these are design issues, and they are hard to fix once the tiles are down. By planning the room in detail before work begins, we avoid them.
Design-led does not mean complicated. It means taking the time to think through the room, understanding your priorities and documenting the plan so everyone, from the plumber to the tiler, builds the same bathroom.
Our standards
- Licensed and insured. Plumbing, electrical and building work is carried out by licensed and insured trades, with compliance certificates issued where required.
- AS 3740 waterproofing. Every wet area is waterproofed to the Australian Standard, with photographs of the membrane kept for your records.

Questions people often ask
Why is there no figure on the website for a new bathroom? No. Bathrooms vary too much in size, condition and selections for a sensible figure without seeing the room. After the design consultation we provide a written quotation.
How long will my bathroom be out of action? It depends on the scope, but a full bathroom renovation takes several weeks once work begins on site, allowing time for waterproofing to cure properly. We give you a clear timeline before we start.
Do I need a building permit? Most like-for-like bathroom renovations do not need a building permit, but plumbing and electrical work always requires licensed trades and compliance certificates. Structural changes, extensions and some other work may need a permit. We discuss this during the consultation.
Can you work on homes on tank water and septic? Yes. Many of our clients around Drouin are on tank water or septic, and we plan fixtures and drainage to suit.
Our FAQ page answers more than twenty-five other common questions.
Guides for Drouin homeowners
We have written a library of plain-English guides covering the topics people ask about most, from waterproofing cure times and tapware finishes to renovating a 1970s bathroom and planning a family bathroom. They are a good place to start if you are early in your planning.
A word about the hidden work
Most of what makes a bathroom last sits behind the tiles. The framing must be straight and solid so walls do not move. The floor must be stiff so tiles do not crack. The screed must fall towards the drain so water does not pool. The membrane must be continuous, properly bonded and fully cured. The plumbing must be pressure tested before walls are closed. The exhaust must vent outside. None of this shows in a finished photograph, but all of it decides how the room performs in ten or twenty years.
We document this hidden work as we go. You will see photographs of the framing, rough-in, membrane and falls before tiling begins. It is the simplest way we know to build trust and to give you a record you can keep with your home documents.
Working in occupied homes
Most of our clients live at home during their renovation. We plan the work with that in mind. Before the job starts, we agree where materials will be stored, which entry trades will use and how the work area will be closed off. We protect the floors along the path to the bathroom, use dust barriers and clean up at the end of each day. If your home has only one bathroom, we talk through options for the period when the room is out of use, and we sequence the work to keep that period as short as the curing times allow.
Thinking about selling?
A well-renovated bathroom is one of the improvements buyers notice first. If you are preparing a Drouin home for sale, we can help you focus on changes that make the room feel fresh, clean and well maintained, while keeping the scope sensible. We are happy to discuss timing around a planned listing date.
Caring for your new bathroom
A new bathroom needs very little maintenance, but a few habits help it stay at its best. Run the exhaust fan during every shower and for a while afterwards, so moisture leaves the room. Squeegee the screen and wipe the floor near the shower after use. Clean grout gently with a pH-neutral cleaner rather than harsh acids or bleach, which can wear grout and sealers over time. Check silicone joints at the base of the shower and around the vanity each year, and have them replaced if they split or discolour. At handover we leave care notes specific to the products in your room.
